Description

This dataset lists more than 500,000 observations of corals and sponges living at a depth of more than 50 meters. Collected by NOAA and its partners, the data includes accurate information on taxonomy, geographic location (latitude, longitude), depth, as well as the sampling method used (camera, ROV, trawl, etc.). Each recording is attributed to an identified source (institute or scientific publication) and classified according to its type (image, video, specimen...).

What is this dataset for?

  • Mapping and modeling deep-sea biodiversity
  • Develop algorithms for the automatic detection of underwater biological structures
  • Support deep-sea conservation and environmental policy projects

Can it be enriched or improved?

Yes, the dataset can be enriched by new observations, additional annotations (e.g. associated ecosystems), or even a categorization of environmental threats. It is also possible to cross-reference this data with satellite images or bathymetric models to obtain further analysis.

🔎 In summary

Criterion Evaluation
🧩 Ease of use⭐⭐⭐✩✩ (Readable CSV format, but requires processing for spatial analysis)
🧼 Need for cleaning⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (Low: well-structured data but heterogeneous across sources)
🏷️ Annotation richness⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (Very good: taxonomy, geolocation, methods, sources)
📜 Commercial license✅ Yes (CC0)
👨‍💻 Beginner friendly⚠️ With guidance for handling geographic data
🔁 Fine-tuning ready✅ Suitable for ecological classification or prediction models
🌍 Cultural diversity🌊 Multi-source data covering several ocean regions

🧠 Recommended for

  • Marine ecologists
  • Environmental data scientists
  • AI projects for conservation

🔧 Compatible tools

  • QGIS
  • Python (pandas, geopandas)
  • Table
  • (tidyverse)

💡 Tip

Use depth, location, and sampling type to filter subsets of interest (e.g. deep corals observed by ROV only).

Frequently Asked Questions

Can this data be used for interactive map visualization?

Yes, geographic coordinates allow easy integration into GIS tools like QGIS or Leaflet to create interactive maps.

Are there images associated with the observations in this dataset?

The source type (image, video, notation, specimen...) is shown for each line, but media files are not included in this Kaggle dataset.

Can this dataset be combined with climate or bathymetric data?

Absolutely. This game is well suited to be crossed with environmental layers such as temperature, sea currents, or underwater terrain.
