Natural Language Generation (NLG)
Natural Language Generation (NLG) is the AI discipline focused on turning structured information into coherent, human-readable text. While Natural Language Processing (NLP) is often about understanding, NLG is about speaking: transforming numbers, graphs, or abstract representations into words and sentences.
Over the last decade, NLG has shifted from rule-based systems — where developers manually coded templates — to deep learning approaches capable of producing long, context-aware texts. The rise of transformer architectures such as GPT has taken NLG to a new level, enabling machines to generate not just short reports but entire essays, conversations, and narratives.
Real-world use cases include financial report automation, e-commerce product descriptions, conversational agents, real-time commentary in sports, and accessibility tools (for example, describing images for visually impaired users). In journalism, projects like Automated Insights or The Washington Post’s Heliograf already use NLG to draft articles.
Challenges remain significant. Ensuring factual correctness is one of the biggest hurdles: models are prone to hallucinations, generating plausible but false statements. Another concern is bias reproduction — NLG systems may replicate stereotypes present in their training data. Finally, there’s the broader question of how to balance automation with creativity, given that NLG is increasingly used in creative industries.
In short, NLG sits at the intersection of linguistics, computer science, and ethics. It has the potential to democratize content creation but must be developed responsibly.
